Admissions

The Ph.D. in Data Science program at UNC Charlotte has a priority admission deadline of February 1, 2025, for Fall 2025 entry. Applicants should have a baccalaureate Master’s degree in data science or a related field. Non-native English speakers must demonstrate proficiency through approved means. A satisfactory GRE score is required, though waivers are available under certain conditions. Prerequisites include coursework in mathematics, statistics, and programming. Application materials consist of transcripts, test scores, a personal statement, letters of recommendation, and a resume.

Application Review

The Ph.D. admission review committee includes faculty from across the School of Data Science. This committee evaluates applications, essays, test scores, and recommendations, considering the program’s goals and historical data. Typically, each application is assessed by at least two reviewers, who take into account research experience, academic achievements, and personal statements. The committee’s decisions aim to build a diverse and well-rounded class, with some decisions referred to a graduate school admissions board for final approval. Their careful evaluation shapes the institution’s future by selecting qualified candidates.
